Jill Donaldson has been a Principal at IWJ Law since 2006 having joined in 2000 as an associate. Jill has extensive experience working with senior executives and their boards in the areas of M&A and capital markets, compliance and risk management, corporate governance, stakeholder engagement and strategic planning and implementation. Jill brings a breadth of experience as a strategic advisor on business, legal and regulatory issues that arise with the formation, financing, governance and operation of public and private investment funds and of listed and private companies.
Jill’s clients include some of the largest retail venture capital funds in Canada, as well as mutual funds and limited partnerships operating across Canada and their respective executive management teams. Jill has served as corporate secretary for one of these public funds for the past 12 years being a proactive resource to the board and taking a leading role in governance by providing advice and counsel on board responsibilities, strategy and logistics. Jill promotes active and collaborative decision-making process for Boards tied to strong corporate governance, avoiding group think and supporting effective deliberations and stakeholder capitalism. She is also an advocate for Boards to engage in timely generative leadership and to understand the legal and risk environment in which potential business transformations may occur.
Jill obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of British Columbia Law School in 1996 and was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1997. Prior to attending law school, Jill received a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from the University of British Columbia. Jill obtained her ICD.D designation in 2019.
Jill is also active in the Vancouver community acting as current co-chair for the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice organizing committee for the Gift of Time Gala having been on the committee for the past four years and previous to this spent six years on the organizing committee for the RBC Race for the Kids, B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. Jill is also an engaged parent with her husband taking on numerous parent leadership roles in their daughters’ school.
